2017 Appellate Moot Court Competition Information
The Appellate Moot Court Committee is excited about the upcoming 23rd Annual Appellate Moot Court Competition. The Competition is scheduled to take place from May 16-18, 2017. The First Round will be held on St. Croix on May 16 at the District Court of the Virgin Islands and on St. Thomas on May 17 at the Supreme Court of the Virgin Islands. The final round will be held on St. Thomas on May 18 at the Supreme Court of the Virgin Islands. All V.I. Bar Association members are invited to attend.
This year the students have been presented with a challenging hypothetical case involving a legal action for an injunction to enjoin the Moot University of the Virgin Islands from enforcing its “free speech zone” regulation enacted prior to the Commencement address by President of the United States, Ronald J. Crump. The Petitioner asserts that the regulation which requires that students sign a non-violence agreement is a violation of the First Amendment right to free speech.
The schools are in need of additional Attorney coaches to help the students prepare for the upcoming competition. If you are willing to volunteer, please contact the Committee Chair, Malorie Winnie Diaz, directly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
